resynesthiz is a Max for Live Instrument device for converting images into sound, with the ability to mangle the sound beyond recognition with its source image through additive synthesis. Images loaded into the device can be scanned (non)linearly through a function editor or manually with a MIDI-mappable slider.

When a column of pixels is scanned, it is mapped onto a bank of 1000 sine wave oscillators distributed across a frequency range of the audio spectrum. Pixel brightness values control the amplitudes of their associated sine waves, with pixels higher in the image corresponding to higher frequencies. The frequency distribution can also be heavily manipulated, squished, shifted, expanded, and filtered.

resynesthiz can generate highly intricate and complex spectra like the predecessors that inspired it, Metasynth and Photosounder. As an experimental sound design tool and performance-ready instrument built for Ableton Live, it leverages the image as a complex information source rich with potential for musical structure.

Also included is a folder of 68 geometric images generated with Facet so you can immediately start playing.

A detailed walkthrough video is available here.
